Welcome March (Almanac 2026)
Dates and seasonal ideas to bring you closer to Nature in March
WELCOME MARCH
The beginning of March marks the beginning of the Wheel of the Year which maps the Pagan seasons, holidays and festivals of the solar year, following the cycles of Nature, agriculture and human life. The Wheel of the Year is recognised across the British Isles as a means to create a unified way of honouring the natural cycles and seasons.
March is a pivotal month, leading up to the Ostara, so named after the Goddess Eostre, representing fertility, light and the awakening of Nature, featuring symbols like eggs, hares and spring flowers, This is when the Vernal Equinox takes place on Saturday 21 March, marking the point when day and night are of equal length. This greatly anticipated event is recognised as a celebration of fertility, renewal and the return of the Sun’s warmth on Earth.
Oudoors in fields and pastures, March take us right into the middle of the Hares’ breeding season. This is when male Hares are out looking for female Hares to mate with. A chase ensues but sometimes the females don’t want the attention. That’s when the boxing match begins! When the female has had enough of being chased, she turns around and wallops the male to discourage him. Take that! It looks like they’re boxing because the female and male are on their back legs, hitting each other with their front paws. They even pull out fur! It’s not just boxing that hares are great at. They’re also amazing sprinters! They can reach 40 miles per hour when they run at full pelt. Incredible!
This wonderful description of Hares in Spring was written by The Wildlife Trust - Mad as a March Hare. They are fast becoming extinct which is scandelous considering their ancient history as a treasured archetype. Having declined by more than 80 percent in the past 100 years due to intensive farming, cutting down hedgerows and chemical poisons, there are less safe places for them to live and roam free.
Make the most of their beautiful presence this Spring by finding a place to settle in and quietly watch them do their thing. Nature never disappoints and it's up to us to go out there and enjoy such gifts of life as much as we can.

March's flower - Daffodils
There are two hundred species of Daffodil and they have a long history, with recorded mentions dating back as far as 300 BC. They were first described by the Greek botanist and philosopher, Theophrastus, in his work Enquiry into Plants. As March's birth flower, the Daffodil symbolises rebirth, new beginnings and joy, marking the bold and bright arrival of Spring.
This vibrant flower is associated with beauty and the Greek myth of Narcissus, where the blooming season of the Daffodil brings messages of hope and prosperity, and, in Wales, is central to the celebration of St David's Day.
March's birthstone - Aquamarine
March's birthstone is Aquamarine whose name comes from the Latin for seawater, represented by the legend of ancient mariners who claimed the gem would calm waves and keep sailors safe at sea. Aquamarine was also thought to bring happiness in marriage and protect the wearer against foes in battle and litigation. It was also thought to make the wearer unconquerable and amiable, and to quicken the intellect.
This pretty precioius stone represents courage, loyalty and friendship, and its healing properties have beenn used historically to drive out negative emotions. Aquamarine energy helps to heal emotional trauma, relieve stress and bring calm to the body.

March's Quote
March came in that Winter like the meekest and mildest of lambs, bringing days that were crisp and golden and tingling, each followed by a frosty pink twilight which gradually lost itself in an elfland of moonshine.
