What is it?
Methyl-sulfonyl-methane (MSM) is an organic sulfur compound (organic compounds that contain sulfur) which occurs naturally in some plants and in small amounts in many organic foods such as milk, vegetables and fruits. Sulfur is the third-most prevalent mineral in you body, and is part of many vital functions, such as enabling glutathione, an important antioxidant.
Organic sulfur has long been referred to as a 'healing mineral' in natural health when deficiencies lead to pain and inflammation throughout the body. MSM helps to reduce inflammation and assist in antioxidant processes that help to relieve oxidative stress.
Without it, vital cell structures like fats, proteins and DNA are damaged, leading to chronic inflammation, accelerated aging and a higher risk of long-term disease.
In addition, MSM is used for post-exercise soreness, repair system support and externally to treat skin conditions.
What does it do?
Sulfur is the fourth most abundant mineral element after calcium, phosphorus and potassium, and is present in relatively large amounts in our hair, nails, skin and cartilage. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a source of organic sulfur found in these tissues.
This natural bioavailable healing mineral is essential in helping to build proteins, repair cells and form healthy connective tissues such as cartilage and collagen. This is why it is so good for the skin and is known as the 'beauty mineral' due as it supports the production of keratin and collagen which strengthens the hair and nails while supporting skin health.
Sulphur is a trace-element, the importance of which is often confused sulphur dioxide which is a toxic substance. In distinct contrast, organic sulphur is an essential compound required for optimal health. It is part of the composition of certain amino acids, and thus a great many proteins which means it constitutes a key element in the structure of joint cartilage and connective tissue such as the dermis.
In other words, sulphur is found throughout the body and contributes to its general well-being.
How is it used?
Organic sulphur (MSM) comes in powder form or capsules depending on your preference. It is important to choose a product with clearly stated methylsulfonylmethane content with no fillers or additives. Always choose a reliable brand with transparent quality standards (see below).
MSM is particularly effective when combined with Vitamin C because they support each other in their bodily tasks, acting in synergy with each other. Naturally occurring Vitamin C from an organic source (or powder which is easier to measure) improves the MSM's absorbance rate for more potent effects.
Vitamin C and MSM share several complementary roles, such as their antioxidant properties and effective anti-inflammatory and cartilage protection, making them ideal companions when taken as supplements.
Making MSM and Vitamin C part of your daily regime helps improve your skin, hair and nails as well as reduce the time it takes to recover after exercise. Many other benefits include:
Natural support for joints, muscles and mobility
MSM contributes to connective tissue health and helps maintain a healthy range of motion.
Enhanced recovery, reduce inflamation and comfort
Many users report improved comfort and faster recovery after training or physical activity.
Beauty from within results
MSM supports collagen and keratin production, promoting healthier skin, stronger hair, and nails.
Where can I get it?
I have just bought a new supply of Methyl‐Sulphonyl‐Methane (MSM) with organic Rosehip Powder from The Clay Cure which is a local company base in Totnes, Devon (no affiliation). All their products are handmade and inspired by traditional wellness practices. If you don't need the extra Vitamin C, their Pure MSM provides a natural source of bioavailable sulphur required by the body.
As with all healing minerals and other natural supplements, start with a small amount such as ½ teaspoon in a large glass of filtered water. You can slowly increase the dose over a period of weeks to one tablespoon or two depending on your requirements. As with Magnesium, if you take too much, your body will simply flush it out naturally but please do your own research.
MSM Sulphur tastes very bitter in water so you want need to add it to a smoothie or stir it into a glass of Raw Coconut Milk around mid morning (and again late afternoon or early evening), This I combine with a capsule each of Magnesium and Vitamin B Complex having already taken my Iodine and Copper first thing with filtered water. Viramin C donates electrons to Iodine, which neutralises it so it is best to take them at different times.
Another great source of organic sulphur or Clean Geniune MSM in vegetarian capsules can be purchased in various quantities from British Supplements (no affiliation).
What about my pets?
The Clay Cure produces an advanced pet supplement which combines pharmaceutical-grade MSM (99.99 percent pure) with naturally sourced Vitamin C from organic Rosehip Powder to create a blend designed to support overall structural health and wellbeing in dogs, cats and other animals.
This provides provide nutritional support for healthy connective tissues, joints, skin, coat and overall mobility.
