January's flower - Snowdrops

The name, Snowdrop, is derived from it genus name, galanthus, which combines the Greek words gala (milk) and anthos (flower) relating to the flower’s pure white appearance. Snowdrops are thought to bring the promise of abundance, or following loss or misfortune, they represent compassion and forgiveness.

This beautiful, delicate flower is often one of the first flowers to appear through the snow in late Winter bringing a fresh energy of optimism and beauty into the world.

January's birthstone - Garnets

Garnet is a beautiful stone with a deep red hue and naturally occuring colours including greens, yellows and blues. It can range in appearance from completely opaque to transparent and, in folkore, it was used to protects its wearer from enemies, illness and bad dreams.

Known for its healing properties, Garnet was viewed as a symbol of love and friendship and as a way to provide protection and enhance healing energy.

January's Folklore

  • Fog in January brings a wet Spring.
  • A favourable January brings us a good year.
  • If grass grows in January, it will grow badly the whole year.
  • A summerish January, a winterish Spring.
  • As the day lengthens, the cold strengthens.

January's Quote

January is my favorite month, when the light is plainest, least coloured. And, I like the feeling of beginnings.
