Forest Sanctuary

Walking through a forest after the rain brings sanctuary to the soul

Forest Sanctuary - Short Prose by Sue Cartwright, Spiral Leaf

I walk deeper into the forest on an open path that stretches out before me in a gently curving line. The glint of vegetation catches my eye, everywhere sparkling with raindrops following a recent shower. I tilt my head upwards to take in the magnificence of all manner of trees towering above me and surrounding me like a citadel - a stronghold of Nature where I feel at once safe and at peace. My heartbeat slows to a steady pace and all traces of the outside world fade away and disappear, leaving only the experience of each moment, rich in beauty and brilliance that cannot be compared.

I am alone in the forest where the sound of silence and the murmurings of Nature are amplified. A natural symphony of birds chirping from high branches, creatures rustling in the undergrowth, water droplets dripping from branches and leaves, an occasional breeze rippling through tall grasses and plant life nestled on the woodland floor. I tune into my breath, accompanied by the sound of my sturdy boots, crunching softly on the gravel path beneath me.

I take a deep breath to feel the cool air fill my lungs with energy as my nose takes in the heady scent of pine oils, resin sap and the earthy undertones of soil, heightened by the distinct aroma of moisture suspended in the air. I reach out my hand to gently brush a profusion of ferns springing from the base of the steep bank adjacent to the path. Their perfect fronds feel like feathers, so soft and delicate against my skin, sending minute electrical pulses through my fingers to my body in exquisite waves of joy.

I pause a moment to sink my hands into a bed of thick moss at the base of a gigantic tree. Like a deep velvety cushion or the softest sponge, water oozes between my fingers and is cool to the touch. I imagine the diverse range of healthy bacteria being absorbed into my skin's microbiome and I thank Mother Nature for her gifts of life. The wonders of moss are far-reaching for Nature and no less wonderful for human health and wellbeing.

As my mind, body and soul harmonise with the gentle rhythm of the forest, I hear the masterful croak of a Raven as it glides high above the trees. The tribal croaking sound brings a message that says: Welcome to the forest, and with it a message of love from ancestors who once lived in these heavily forested lands. In the quiet tranquility, I can hear the slow swoosh of its spectacular black wings, accompanied by a distinct gurgling croak and a high-pitched musical squeaking - a whistling noise that finally fades as this beautiful, mystical bird flies on to peruse the extent of the forest from its giddy vantage point above the trees.

A myriad of colours unique to Nature's natural palette, in a vast array of greens, russets, golds and browns, bring comfort to my eyes and soothe my soul. Our human vision is naturally sensitive to green wavelengths which is why we see so much of this beautiful, restful colour surrounding us in Nature. It acts as a comfort blanket that we can wrap around us whenever we choose to spend time in the natural world. It is no wonder we feel so relaxed and energised when we do.

A forest path is a gateway to Nature where an exhibition of life's vital energy unfolds. It's an experience that can be felt and appreciated through the seasons where Mother Nature brings infinite variety and no walk is ever the same. A forest is a playground for the senses, conjouring a sense of adventure and discovery that brings sanctuary to the heart, mind, body and soul.

Oh, such beautiful pathways, lead me to wander and to wonder in awe.
