The Hibernators
Surviving the hard conditions and scarcity of food in the Winter
Black Bears, Brown Bears, Grizzly Bears, all;
Bedded down snugly in terra firma soil;
Cosy dens deep, dug with claw-like nails;
A hollow for sleep, as the Earth exhales.
Hedgehogs, Hazel Dormice, Deer Mice, Snails;
Ladybugs, Bumblebees, Snakes and Squirrels;
Curled up in tunnels, in crevices and holes;
Mother Nature's dormitory, as silent as stone.
Brown Long Earred Bats, Horseshoes and Pips;
Heart rates slowed to torpor, the fewest beats;
One breath every pair of hours, a miraculous feat;
Essential for life on Earth, masters of true flight.
Badgers hunker down in setts, foraging on occasion;
Reptiles and amphibians, in dormancy or brumation;
Slipping into sheltered spots, hibernacula for protection;
All is calm and all is still for the duration of the Winter.
