Welcome June (Almanac 2026)
Dates and seasonal ideas to bring you closer to Nature in June
WELCOME JUNE
The month of June brings in the beginning of Summer when Mother Nature's buds burst open in the warmth of the Sun to adorn our gardens, hedgerows, fields, woodlands and wild places with their eautiful array of colours, petals and heady scents.
As the Sun gently rises to its highest point in the sky on Mid Summer's Day, we are free to enjoy the sunshine for 16 hours of the day. Be sure to make the most of relaxing and pottering in the sunshine so that your body can stock up on natural Vitimin D needed to stay healthy. Cover up or sit in the shade rather than use chemical sunscreens with harmful trace chemicals that can be aborbed into your bloodstream directly through your skin.
One of my favourite things to do in June, is to potter in my tiny garden and watch the bees dutifully and diligently harvesting the purple flowers in their element at this time of year. I think they are called Campanula with their star-shaped open petals that the bees adore as they feed on the nectar and gather the pollen to take back to their hives.
This is the time of year to spend time in your garden or in a favourite secret place in the wild. Make sure this beautiful month is a joyous time with lots of dates made with Nature and with friends and family outside in the fresh air. This glorious month has been celebrated for thousands of years by Pagans who used to light bonfires and dance on Midsummer’s Eve with thankful prayers for Mother Nature's abundance. The custom was for young boys to jump the bonfires when the highest jump was believed to predict the height of the coming year’s crop.

June's flowers - Rose and Honeysuckle
These beautiful flowers portray the essence and freshness of early Summer. Roses bring their timeless beauty and captivating scents, long been associated with love, passion and admiration. In mythology, it is said that the Rose was created by Chloris, Goddess of Flowers, who found a lifeless nymph in the forest. Unable to resurrect her, Chloris transformed her into a flower. She called upon Aphrodite to give beauty, Dionysus to add nectar, the three Graces to bestow charm, brilliance, and joy, and Zephyr to blow away the clouds so Apollo could shine upon her. Thus the Rose was born from collective divine effort, making it the queen of flowers. [SOURCE: The Folklore of the Rose: A Historical Journey Through Thorns and Petals - La Rose Florist].
Honeysuckle is the perfect flower to represent a beautiful time of the year when Nature is flourishing and pollinators are busy collecting nectar and pollen - as much as they can need and can carry back to their loved ones. This treasured wildflower, with its vibrant green leaves and flowing cascades of creamy yellow and pink flowers, brings a sweet fragrance that's intoxicating to bees and a joy to see. For all these reasons, Honeysuckle is known to symbolise abundance, shappiness and affection.
